15, Including Infant, Killed in Attack on Plateau State Hamlet
Fifteen people, including a one-year-old boy, were brutally murdered on Sunday night in an attack on Ri Do, also known as Gidan Ado, a hamlet in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The assailants, yet to be identified, carried out the unprovoked attack on the Irigwe-dominated community, leaving several others severely injured.
The Irigwe Development Association (IDA), in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Sam Jugo, confirmed the attack and condemned the killings. According to the statement, the community, predominantly inhabited by Irigwe natives from Bassa, was invaded late at night without any provocation.
Expressing deep concerns about the timing of the attack, just days before the yuletide season, the IDA leadership called on security agencies to prevent such heinous acts and to take measures to avoid retaliatory violence.
"The identities of the perpetrators have not yet been ascertained as of press time, and it would be premature to speculate on their identity to avoid interfering with ongoing investigations," the statement read.
The IDA also urged members of the community to remain calm and exercise restraint, expressing hope that security agencies would act swiftly to prevent further occurrences and reprisals.
As of press time, both the joint security task force, Operation Safe Haven, and the police had yet to issue statements regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the victims of the attack have been laid to rest in a mass burial at the community burial ground.
