AFGHANISTAN: TALIBAN OFFERS AMNESTY, PROMISES WOMEN RIGHTS AND MEDIA FREEDOM
The Taliban Government has promised women’s rights, media freedom, and amnesty for Government officials in the group’s first news conference after taking charge of the Afghan capital, Kabul, om Sunday.
The promises of amnesty from Enamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission, were the first comments on how the Taliban might govern on a national level.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson, said on Tuesday that the rights of women will be protected within the framework of Islam.
He also said the Taliban wished for peaceful relations with other countries and that no group would be allowed to use Afghan territory for attacks against any nation.
“I would like to assure the international community, including the United States, that nobody will be harmed. We don’t want any internal or external enemies.
"Those working in any part or department of the government should resume their duties with full satisfaction and continue their duties without any fear," he said.
This comes amid instability in the country as about five persons were reported dead following a chaos as thousands of Afghans bombarded the city’s airport trying to flee the group’s feared hardline brand of rule.
The Taliban swept into Afghanistan’s capital Sunday after the Government collapsed and the embattled president joined an exodus of his fellow citizens and foreigners.
The city of Kabul was hit with pandemonium as Helicopters raced overhead throughout the day to evacuate personnel from the U.S. Embassy. Smoke rose near the compound as staff destroyed important documents, and the American flag was lowered. Several other Western missions and International powers also rushed to evacuate its citizens from Afghanistan.
Videos emerged online showing hundreds of people running across the tarmac as U.S. soldiers fired warning shots in the air.
