ALASSANE QUATTARA WINS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN COTE D’IVOIRE AMID BOYCOTT FROM OPPOSITION PARTY
President of Cote D’ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, has won the country’s presidential election by amassing 94% votes in the polls.
His victory in the election comes amid a boycott from the main opposition party.
On Monday, November 2, the opposition candidates; Pascal Affi N’Guessan and Henri Konan Bédié, urged Ivorians not to vote, and said their party was creating a transitional Government which would organize a new election.
The opposition party said it was illegal for President Quattara to run for a third term as it broke rules on term limits.
However, the President’s party refuted this, citing a constitutional change in 2016 which states that his first term did not count.
The election was marred by intimidation, violence and electoral malpractice, with 16 persons killed in August, and 4 more at the polls on Saturday.
Alassane Dramane Ouattara has been President of Ivory Coast since 2010.
