Anambra Police Probe Alleged Child Trafficking Case, Rescue Female Suspect from Mob

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident following the rescue of a woman from an angry mob at a hospital in Obosi.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Anurika Nweme, was rescued by operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters at Divine Mercy Hospital, located along Eze Iweka Road in Awada, Obosi.

According to preliminary reports, the woman allegedly gained access to the hospital's maternity ward on the afternoon of June 23, 2026, while dressed in clothing resembling that of a healthcare worker. She was reportedly observed taking covert video recordings of newborn babies within the facility.

Eyewitnesses stated that when questioned by hospital personnel and other individuals present, the suspect claimed to be a staff member of the hospital. However, subsequent verification by the hospital management reportedly confirmed that she was not employed by the facility.

The development sparked suspicion among those at the hospital, leading to a confrontation before police officers intervened and rescued the woman from possible mob action.

Police authorities disclosed that the suspect is currently in protective custody and is assisting investigators with efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify any other individuals who may be connected to the case.

The Command stated that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that further updates will be provided as new findings emerge.
