Army Debunks Claims of Unlawful Detention of Investigative Journalist
The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has refuted claims circulating on social media that it unlawfully detained investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo in Port Harcourt. In a statement released by the Division, it clarified that Soyombo’s arrest occurred during an anti-oil theft operation targeting a notorious gang involved in pipeline vandalism and illegal oil connections.
According to the Army, troops apprehended multiple suspects, including Soyombo, at an illegal oil bunkering site. Preliminary investigations are underway to establish the extent of their involvement in the illegal activities. The Division dismissed allegations suggesting that Soyombo's arrest was unrelated to the operation, describing such claims as unfounded.
The 6 Division emphasized its commitment to combating oil theft and safeguarding national resources. It urged media outlets to verify facts before publishing reports and assured the public of its dedication to maintaining transparency and security in the region.
