Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP Over Party’s Direction

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a departure from the party’s founding vision as the reason for his exit.

This marks the third time Atiku, one of the founding members of the PDP, has left the party.

In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Atiku said his decision was prompted by recent developments in the party that no longer align with the ideals upon which it was established.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he stated. “As a founding member, it is heartbreaking to take this step, but the direction the party has taken is inconsistent with the core principles we once stood for.”

The former Vice President expressed appreciation for the opportunities the PDP gave him, noting that serving two terms as Vice President and contesting the presidency under its platform were defining moments in his political journey.

While acknowledging the difficult nature of his decision, Atiku emphasized that irreconcilable differences with the party’s current leadership and direction compelled him to withdraw his membership.

He concluded the letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership well in their future endeavours.
