BUS DRIVERS HACK OFFICER TO DEATH IN LAGOS, LATSMA REACTS

Lagos commercial bus drivers on Tuesday attacked and hacked an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), to death at Anthony area of the State.


The General Manager of LASTMA, Olajide Oduyoye, who condemned the attack, said the deceased, Obasu Godwin, alongside his colleague, Adeniyi Hakeem, were attacked by an operator of a Suzuki commercial bus also known as ‘korope’ and other officers at Anthony on Tuesday.

 

According to the LASTMA Chairman's narration, the victims were attacked with machetes and other dangerous weapons by the driver of a commercial bus with registration number FKJ 452 YC, plying Bariga to Oshodi alongside some other drivers, after his vehicle was apprehended for contravening the Traffic Law of the State.


Oduyoye said the officers, who were in their mufti, had just finished their daily assignments and were on their way home when they were attacked by the negligent bus drivers.


He said; “Obazu was struck severally with machetes resulting in deep lacerations on the head and his eventual death, while Adeniyi Hakeem, who was also attacked in similar fashion has been hospitalised and in coma."

The LASTMA boss also noted that some senior officers who were around the area were lucky to escape being attacked by the bus drivers. He warned all cultists disguising as commercial drivers to desist from this act and any traffic violators shall be punished and brought to justice.


He further said that seven of the culprits have been arrested by the police while a manhunt for the remaining bus drivers who perpetrated the act is ongoing.


The LASTMA PRO, Bolaji Oreagba, commiserated with the family of the deceased, and said the injured officer is currently receiving treatment at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital.
