President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the passing of Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died at the age of 56. The respected military leader passed away Tuesday night in Lagos after an undisclosed period of illness, according to an official statement from the State House.
Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja’s distinguished career in the Nigerian Army spanned over three decades, marked by dedication and a drive for excellence. Appointed as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu, he quickly became a pivotal figure in the country’s defense strategies.
Lt. General Lagbaja began his military journey at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the academy’s 39th Regular Course. Over the years, he took on key roles, including serving as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, and leading numerous critical internal security operations across the nation.
His notable contributions included leadership in Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. His commitment to professional growth was underscored by his graduation from the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies.
Lt. General Lagbaja leaves behind his wife, Mariya, and two children. President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation, honoring his dedication and service.
