Christian Association of Nigeria Protests Governor Otti's Signpost Tax on Abia Churches

The government of Abia State, led by Governor Alex Otti, has introduced a tax on church signposts, sparking widespread criticism from religious leaders. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed strong disapproval of the policy, stating that Abia is the only state in Nigeria imposing such a tax .

In a letter obtained by SaharaReporters, the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, and Secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, urged Governor Otti to reconsider the decision. They warned that the policy could lead Christians to perceive the government as "anti-church" ¹. The CAN leadership proposed a roundtable discussion with Christian leaders to find a mutually beneficial solution.

Many have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the tax. Some argue that churches should pay taxes, citing the need for economic growth and civic responsibility ¹. Others see the tax as an unnecessary burden on religious institutions.

The Abia State Internal Revenue Service emphasizes the importance of tax payment for economic growth, savings, and civic responsibility ². However, the government has not publicly responded to the controversy surrounding the church signpost tax.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how Governor Otti's administration will address the concerns of religious leaders and the public. Will the government reconsider the tax or find alternative solutions to fund its programs? Only time will tell.
