INEC Seeks Additional Funding for 2027 Elections, Lists Key Areas of Need

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has requested additional funding from the Federal Government to prepare for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made the appeal on Friday while defending the commission’s 2025 budget proposal before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

Prof. Yakubu highlighted the need for increased financial support to address critical areas of the commission’s operations. These include:

  • Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise
  • Logistics for off-cycle elections
  • Replacement of damaged election materials, such as Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), ballot boxes, and voting cubicles
  • Repairs of INEC offices in Local Government Areas

Yakubu emphasized the significance of 2025 as a pivotal year for preparations, noting that timely disbursement of funds would ensure smooth operations and effective planning.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and sustaining democracy. The commission assured stakeholders that the additional funding would bolster its capacity to deliver credible elections in 2027.

Meanwhile, INEC has also addressed concerns regarding uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) dating back to the 2015 voter registration exercise. Clarifying reports about the alleged destruction of over six million uncollected PVCs, INEC stated:

"The report is incorrect. At no time did the commission contemplate the destruction of uncollected PVCs."

The commission remains focused on improving the electoral process and fostering transparency as it prepares for future elections.
