COAS Declares War on Terrorists, Vows to Crush Lakurawa Group

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed troops to intensify operations and apply ingenuity in the fight against terrorism in North West Nigeria. He gave the charge on Thursday, February 20, 2025, during his operational visit to the Theatre Command of Operation Fansan Yamma and the Headquarters 1 Brigade Nigerian Army in Gusau, Zamfara State.

After receiving briefings from Major General Oluyinka Soyele, Theatre Commander of Operation Fansan Yamma, and Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, Commander of 1 Brigade, the COAS commended the bravery and dedication of the troops, noting their significant successes in neutralizing key terrorist leaders. He highlighted the decimation of the Lakurawa terrorist group, attributing their downfall to the relentless efforts of the Nigerian Army in collaboration with sister security agencies.

General Oluyede praised troops’ commitment to their duties, acknowledging their critical role in defending the nation’s security. He also appreciated public support in the fight against terrorism, emphasizing the importance of military-civilian cooperation in achieving lasting peace.


At the Headquarters 1 Brigade, the Army Chief assured the troops of continued logistical and moral support, reaffirming his commitment to providing the necessary combat enablers and welfare measures to boost their morale. He urged troops to uphold esprit de corps and camaraderie for greater operational efficiency and called on all Nigerians to join efforts in making the country safer.

General Oluyede’s visit to the North West theatre of operations, which began on Monday, February 17, 2025, aims to assess and reinforce ongoing counterterrorism operations. He was accompanied by Major General Abdulkalifa Ibrahim, Commander Infantry Corps; Major General Robert Sinjen, Chief of Operations (Army); Major General Erema Akerejola, Chief of Logistics (Army); Major General Mayerinso Saraso, General Officer Commanding 1 Division; Major General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding 8 Division; and Major General Abubakar Garba, Provost Marshal (Army).
