COURT GRANTS 18-YEAR-OLD MOTHER BAIL OVER CAESAREAN DELIVERY OF HER BABY
An 18-year-old mother identified as Miss Beauty Obi, an inmate of Warri Custodial Centre, popularly known as Okere Prison was on 26th June 2023, granted bail by the Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Tessy Diai, on compassionate grounds.
The inmate who hails from Obingwa in Imo State became a mother of two weeks old baby after she had given birth through caesarean section at Warri Central Hospital. The little child was placed in an incubator for one week before it was reunited with the mother in custody.
The one week the child spent in the incubator was sponsored by the prison authority which charged N1,000 per hour.
Thereupon, the deputy controller of the Warri Custodial Centre, Mr Edo Joseph Lucky appealed on behalf of the mother that her case was tender before The Chief Judge and thereby resulted in granting her bail to enable her to go to her parents for proper care.
The Chief Judge, also passionately assisted Beauty Obi with the sum of N20,000, and granted her bail in the sum of N250,000 with one surety in like sum, while the surety, who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the trial court, should depose to an affidavit of means and provide his national identity card NIN number.
The said inmate, Beauty Obi, was remanded at the custodian centre with her pregnancy following her arrested at the location where her boyfriend was about to sell a stolen phone which she maintained her claim of being innocent of the armed robbery charge slammed against her, neither know how and where her boyfriend got the phone.
Consequently, the Chief Judge also discharged five who had no case to answer based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions after 539 warrants of inmates have been reviewed.
Among them were Lofore Difference, 37; Innocent Okpaghe, 37; Umukoro Kingsley, 51; and Chenago Wisdom, 29, who was charged with various offences ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping and murder.
