COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: LAGOS CONDEMNS BONFIRE ON ROADS, SAYS IT DAMAGES ASPHALT
Residents of some communities in Lagos have lost sleep over robberies in neighborhoods by gang of roaming hoodlums seizing the coronavirus lockdown terror on the state.
The unrest has led angry residents to burn tires and other flammable substances on road, seen as their own little way of securing their environments and to scare robbers away.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has warned the residents to detest from setting up bornfire on tarred roads surfaces across the state while embarking on vigilante operations.
This was reiterated in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on works and infrastructure, Engineer Aramide Adeniyi.
Adeniyi advice Lagosians to desist from acts, stating that roads are been rehabilitated with tax but destroyed by heat generated from the bornfire.
"Burning of tyres directly on the roads where taxpayers’ money has been expended is not only unpatriotic, environmentally hazardous, but, more importantly, compromises the integrity of the pavement and overall riding surface, especially now that the rains are about to commence".
The Special Adviser therefore appealed to residents to desist from this unwholesome act so that after the lockdown, roads will remain intact, thus preventing the need for further expenditure on infrastructure in the face of scarce resources.
