COVID-19: NAMIBIA’S PRESIDENT ISSUE A 5-YEAR BAN ON BUYING CARS FOR POLITICIANS
Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has announced a 5-year ban on buying of cars for government officials to help save funds to fight against COVID-19.
President Hage Geingob “directed that the vehicle fleet of the Namibian government will not be renewed for the period 2020-2025. No new vehicles will be purchased for members of the executive and public office bearers in the Namibian government,” Alfredo Hengari, Namibia’s presidential spokesman disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, May 14.
According to him, the move is expected to save the government 200 million Namibian dollars, which is equivalent to about US$10.7 million.
The money will be directed “to urgent priorities, specifically at a time when the country is dealing with the health and economic implications of COVID-19,” he added.
Namibia has so far recorded 16 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus and no
deaths.
