BOKO HARAM ABDUCTS LEADER OF BORNO STATE HUNTERS DURING FAILED NEGOTIATION
Breaking News: Boko Haram Abducts Hunter Negotiator.
Impeccable sources say Abdulkareem Umar, also known as Baba-Maigiwa, a 69-year-old, leader of the Borno state Hunters has been held hostage by Boko Haram factional Commander, Modu Sulum in a failed negotiation,".
Baba Maigiwa was currently leading the team of 5,000 hunters who help the Nigerian Military in the counter-insurgency campaign in Borno state.
A source who is familiar with the development said that Baba Maigiwa had initiated talks with the dreaded Boko Haram Commander which had reached a certain level of understanding between the two parties.
"Modu Sulum had promised to lay down his arms along with hundreds of his fighters and accept meaningful reintegration.
"Some of the demands by the insurgent's leader was that the government should give immunity to him and his members to return into the society and leave peacefully, provide them with houses and other basic livelihood support, which the leader of the hunter promised to facilitate.
"Modu Sulum equally requested the negotiators to come along with 15 bicycles tubes and many other items to facilitate the negotiation process at the insurgents camp along the Borzoggo triangle.
In the process of the negotiation that took place on July 4th 2020, the terrorist leader changed his mind, and took Baba Maigiwa along with two other hunters (name withheld), into hostage. Since then, no one has heard from Baba Maigiwa.
The Nigerian government and the Nigerian Army/other security services have continued to use local actors with pre-existing relationships with Boko Haram and ISWAP Jihadist militants to employ the carrot tactics where necessary- with the primary aim to restore long term peace, but trust and sabotage are serious challenges faced in negotiating with jihadist for a cessation of violence. To negotiate or not to negotiate? Your angle.
