Defence Headquarters Debunks Alleged Plan for French Military Base in Nigeria
The Defence Headquarters has dismissed reports suggesting that the French military is planning to establish a base in Nigeria. The allegations, made by human rights activist Mahdi Shehu in a social media post on Saturday, were accompanied by claims of French soldiers' arrival in Borno State.
In his post, Shehu criticized the government, alleging that the deployment of French officers to Maiduguri was part of preparations for the base. He further insinuated that the move could lead to exploitation and oppression of local communities, citing a pattern associated with France’s military presence in Africa.
Responding to the claims, the Defence Headquarters issued a statement categorically denying the allegations. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria hereby state unequivocally that this information is fake, totally false, and mischievous,” the statement read.
The military also referenced earlier comments by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who had previously debunked similar speculations in media interviews. The statement urged the public to disregard the reports, describing them as the work of “mischief makers.”
“The military will continue to carry out its constitutional responsibilities professionally and ensure the territorial integrity of our nation,” the Defence Headquarters assured.
The controversy has sparked public debate, with some questioning the implications of foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s security operations.
