PANIC IN OMOLE PHASE II AS RESIDENT DIES OF CORONAVIRUS

There is growing apprehension in Omole Phase II in Lagos as a suspected Coronavirus patient dies in the estate.

Reports indicate that the deceased was rushed to the nearby Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Olowo-IRA when efforts at getting the NCDC ambulance failed after she presented symptoms of Corona Virus.

The deceased was later transported back home on a commercial Tricycle where she later passed on. The news of her death and the circumstances of her movement in and around the estate has sent shivers down the spine of the residents. They fear a possible active community transmission in the area as the deceased is believed to have made primary contacts with Health Officers at the PHC, the Tricyclist and family members who would have possibly had secondary contacts in the community which may be difficult to track.

Responding to the incident, the Omole Phase II CDA has raised a Stay-At-Home alarm to all residents in the area. In a memo issued to all residents and signed by its Chairman, Mr Bamidele Lanisa, the residents were advised to remain indoors until further notice.

''The notice reads. “Dear Residents, this is to inform you that there is a confirmed case of Coronavirus in our neighbouring community (Olowoira).''

“The patient was taken to the Health Centre and when the NCDC/Lagos ambulance was unavailable to evacuate her, she was returned to her residence in a tricycle and eventually died.''

“As you can imagine, many people came in contact with the patient and the risk of transmission in the neighborhood is real.''

“We advise residents to please stay in their houses and refrain from unnecessarily going about. Please be safe. We advise a total stay at home for now.”

In view of the foregoing, an urgent need for action by the NCDC and Lagos State Ministry of Health to contain the spread of the virus in these communities is strongly advised. Further delay might mean losing the window of opportunity to track and contain the spread.

This should also include the full enforcement of lockdown in the area if it becomes necessary.
