Troops Overrun IPOB/ESN Camp in Imo, Recover Suspected Remains of Slain Soldiers Abducted in 2022
The Nigerian Army has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing operations in the South-East, dismantling a suspected stronghold of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State, while recovering suspected remains of two previously abducted personnel.
The operation, carried out on April 24, 2026, by troops of the 82 Division in collaboration with other security agencies, took place along the Ubaha Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area. It followed actionable intelligence aimed at clearing criminal hideouts and locating the remains of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed by IPOB/ESN elements in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
According to military sources, troops advancing toward the identified hideout came under heavy attack by armed fighters. However, they responded with coordinated firepower, repelled multiple ambush attempts, and forced the assailants to retreat.
Subsequent clearance of the camp led to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The site was carefully excavated, and suspected human remains were recovered.
The remains have been secured for comprehensive forensic examination, including DNA analysis, to confirm their identities. Authorities are also engaging with the families of the deceased to facilitate proper identification and arrange dignified burial rites.
The Army said the operation highlights its commitment to justice for fallen personnel and reflects continued efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating under IPOB/ESN in the region. The discovery of burial sites within the camp, it noted, further exposes the violent activities attributed to the group.
The military reassured residents that operations will continue until all armed groups are neutralised and stability is restored across the South-East. It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information.
