DELTA POLICE COMMAND THWARTS KIDNAPPING ATTEMPT, RECOVERS WEAPONS
The Operatives of Delta State Police Command has successfully foiled a suspected kidnapping attempt and recovered a cache of weapons.
On August 13, 2024, during the graduation ceremony at Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara, the DPO Oghara Division, CSP Olasunkanmi Musiliu, received credible information about an impending kidnapping home plot targeting guests at the event. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, CSP Musiliu led a team of operatives to the suspects' hideout in a bush along Otefe/Ovade Legit Road. Upon sighting the police, the suspected kidnappers fled, sustaining various degrees of gunshot injuries in a shootout with the officers. The police recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine, an English pump-action gun, and a locally made cut-to-size gun from the scene. A manhunt for the fleeing suspects is currently ongoing.
In a separate incident on August 14, 2024, at approximately 7:45 PM, the anti-crime patrol team of Oghara Division, during a stop-and-search operation along Otefe Ijomi Community Road, intercepted a motorcycle carrying two individuals. The suspects, Ovoke Benedict, a 22-year-old computer science student, and Fredrick Urhoborume, a 23-year-old business administration student, both from Delta State Polytechnic Otefe, Oghara, were found in possession of a locally made cut-to-size gun with six live cartridges. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects are members of the Arrow Barger Confraternity. Further investigation is ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, reiterated the Command's commitment to curbing kidnapping, armed robbery, and other related crimes. He urged all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to ensure adequate policing in their areas of responsibility and to adopt community-based policing and proactive patrol measures.
