DSS DG Orders Release of Wrongfully Detained Businesswoman, Approves N20m Compensation for Victims
The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has directed the immediate release of Mrs. Chineze Ozoadibe, an Abuja-based entrepreneur wrongly detained over alleged involvement in illegal oil bunkering. Alongside her release, the DSS boss approved N10 million as compensation.
In addition, five other individuals who were also unjustly detained are to share another N10 million as compensation, according to a credible security source.
The source explained that Mrs. Ozoadibe had been transferred to the DSS by another security agency during an oil bunkering probe but was later found innocent after thorough investigations. “Her arrest was coincidental, and the DG ordered her release with due compensation,” the source said.
The official further noted that this move reflects the new culture of accountability introduced under Ajayi’s leadership. He cited the case of a Jos-based businessman mistakenly shot by DSS operatives in 2016, who had been awarded N10 million in damages by a Federal High Court. It was not until Ajayi assumed office that the compensation was paid—doubled to N20 million, with lifetime medical care added.
“As a seasoned professional, Mr. Ajayi recognizes that even top security agencies can make errors. Since taking charge, he has emphasized diligence, due process, and fairness, while also ensuring that mistakes are acknowledged and victims are fairly treated,” the source added.
To reduce wrongful arrests, Ajayi has directed the DSS legal department to strictly enforce due process, insisting that investigation officers conduct thorough checks before effecting any arrests.
