Edo Governor Signs Law Imposing 21-Year Jail Term for Cultists and Sponsors

The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has enacted a new law prescribing a 21-year prison sentence for cult members and their sponsors. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhllor, on Tuesday.

The newly signed Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025, replaces the previous Edo State Secret Cult (Prohibition Law) 2018, introducing stricter penalties to curb cult-related activities in the state.

Key Provisions of the Law:

  1. Harsher Punishments:

  • Financial and material sponsors of secret cults face 21 years imprisonment under Section 5.
  • Individuals who knowingly harbour cult members or allow cult meetings on their property face 10 years imprisonment as outlined in Section 6. Their properties will also be confiscated and demolished by the state government.
  1. Severe Penalties for Violence:

  • Cultists found guilty of assault, injury, or property destruction in furtherance of secret cult activities face 21 years imprisonment without the option of a fine, as per Section 12.
  • In cases where cult-related activities result in fatalities, perpetrators are liable to the death penalty upon conviction. Their properties and residences will also be confiscated and demolished.

The law, effective from January 24, 2025, aims to strengthen efforts to restore peace and enhance the state’s growth and development.

The statement concluded with a stern warning to the public:

“The general public is advised to take heed and refrain from acts detrimental to the peace, growth, and development of Edo State.”
