ETHIOPIA SENTENCES FORMER MINISTER TO 6 YEARS IMPRISONMENT
An Ethiopian court on Friday, May 6 sentenced Bereket Simon, the country's former communications minister to 6 years imprisonment on corruption charges.
Bereket Simon was minister of communication from 1995 to 2012 under Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's administration.
Bereket co-founded the Amhara region's public investment fund and TIRET which owns companies in the brewing, construction, transport and logistics sectors.
He was arrested on January 2019, on suspicion of mismanagement of public funds.
According to Reuters, a court in Bahirdar, northern Ethiopia found him guilty on two counts of corruption and mismanagement of the institution.
