FG SAYS TAX DEFAULTERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ONGOING RECESSION

The Federal Government on Monday, November 30, said that tax defaulters in Nigeria are responsible for the country's economic recession.

On November 21, Eons Intelligence reported that Nigeria officially entered its worst economic recession since 1987.

Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who made this disclosure, said the low tax remittance by Nigerians had weakened the country's economy.

Mustapha said; “Citizens’ continuous tax default has further plunged developing nations into recession even when the economy is said to be out of recession.

“The obvious fact is that the economic operations of developing nations with citizens’ low tax remittance make the countries economically feeble.”

Mustapha, while speaking at the Second Edition of the Civil Society Tax Compliance Advocacy Workshop 2020 organised in Abuja by Initiative for Leadership and Economic Watch in Nigeria, added that the refusal of Nigerians to pay their taxes as at when due have also indirectly contributed to the low performance of the Government.
