FORMER PRESIDENT OF BURUNDI, PIERRE BUYOYA DIES FROM COVID-19 COMPLICATIONS
Former President of Burundi, Pierre Buyoya, has died from COVID-19 complications.
Buyoya, 71, who resigned as African Union’s special envoy to Mali and the Sahel, reportedly died in an ambulance conveying him to a hospital in Paris.
“He was evacuated to Paris yesterday afternoon. His plane made a stopover and arrived in France in the evening,” a family member said.
He resigned in late November after being sentenced the month prior to life imprisonment in Burundi over the 1993 assassination of his successor.
The deceased was sentenced over Ndadaye’s assassination, along with about 20 military officials.
