Gunmen Attack Kankara General Hospital, Injure Doctor and Abduct Five

Gunmen attacked the Kankara General Hospital in Katsina State on Wednesday, injuring Dr. Murtala Dandashire, who was shot in the thigh, and another unidentified individual. Both are receiving medical treatment. The assailants also abducted five people before fleeing the scene.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Abubakar Aliyu stating that police intervention prevented the situation from worsening. He assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.

A local analyst, Bakatsine (@Dankatsina50), claimed the attackers were linked to Boko Haram. He highlighted a troubling trend of hospital invasions in Katsina, citing three incidents in the last three months, including at Kurfi General Hospital and Mai Tsani Hospital in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area.

Dr. Dandashire, a native of Kankara and a 2019 best-graduating medical student from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was among the victims.

Outrage has grown on social media, with residents calling for improved hospital security and stronger government intervention to address the rising insecurity.

“It’s unfortunate that the once peaceful Katsina State has become a hub for banditry and kidnapping,” wrote a user, Abu Aisha. Another, Lucky Ailemen, noted, “Hospitals are no longer safe. Gunmen now kidnap patients and even take newborns. Security must be prioritized.”

Efforts to curb these attacks are ongoing, as residents demand decisive action to restore peace in the region.
