HEAVY RAINS CAUSE GOLD MINE COLLAPSE IN DRC, AT LEAST 50 FEARED DEAD

A gold mine collapsed on Friday, September 11 following heavy rains in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) killing at least 50 people. 


The accident which occurred at about 3 pm in the town of Kamituga in South Kivu province left several miners trapped.


Theo Ngwabije Kasi, the Provincial Governor, lamented "the tragic deaths of 50 people, most of them young".


Kamituga Mayor Alexandre Bundya has declared two-day mourning, urging locals to help recover the bodies. 


Mining accidents are a common occurrence in DRC, especially at illegally run mines. At least 27 miners died in December 2019 when a gold mine collapsed at the Ndiyo gold quarry, around 25 miles from Watsa.
