INEC UNVEILS POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR CONDUCTING ELECTIONS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a framework guiding forthcoming elections during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Elections at hand are the Gubernatorial polls in Edo and Ondo States scheduled for September 19th and October 10th this year.

The Commission has also fixed dates for the four postponed elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Plateau States.

Some of the guidelines for voters include provision of infrared thermometers at collation centres, mandatory use of face masks, provision of face masks for all Electoral officers, provision of alcohol based sanitizers at polling centres, disinfectant of smart card readers after the finger print of each voter is read.

The Commission also said it will ensure the enforcement of physical distancing while voluntary COVID-19 testing will be made available for INEC staff.

INEC has also vowed to assess all electoral activities and make sure they conform with the COVID-19 protocols.

The Policy framework is setup to enable INEC officials to understand and respond adequately to the challenges of conducting elections in the context of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
