ISWAP Threat Spurs Southern Governors to Strengthen Security Synergy

The Southern Governors’ Forum (SGF) has announced increased collaborative efforts to address potential security threats, particularly the movement of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) members from northern to southern Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Ogun State Governor and SGF Chairman, Dapo Abiodun, through his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the forum highlighted the establishment of a robust intelligence-sharing and operational synergy platform among Southern states.

Governor Abiodun emphasized the need for a strengthened security framework to safeguard lives and property while ensuring regional peace. He stressed proactive measures, stating, “The principles and strategies recommended for the collective good of the South include protection of lives and property, prevention of crime, community policing, economic development, enforcement of human rights, intelligence gathering, and fostering inter-agency collaboration to achieve a unified security approach.”

The forum resolved to enhance existing regional security structures to function as effective local intelligence-gathering mechanisms for formal security agencies. These structures are expected to provide operational support when needed.

This initiative follows increasing reports of terrorist activities potentially expanding to southern Nigeria. In response, Southern governors are prioritizing community policing strategies and grassroots participation to reinforce security efforts.

The statement further noted Governor Abiodun's commitment to a shared security approach, stating, “Security is a shared responsibility of both federal and state governments. Since the inception of his administration, Governor Abiodun has provided unprecedented support to state and federal security agencies, a practice he has extended to his role as Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum.”

As part of these efforts, Southern governors have supplied security agencies with operational vehicles, communication tools, and combat equipment. Additionally, the forum promotes joint security assessments, intelligence sharing, and coordinated actions to tackle common challenges.

Governor Abiodun’s leadership has facilitated consistent monitoring of security agency activities, regular consultations with regional counterparts, and enhanced crime prevention strategies. The forum has also urged all Southern states to adopt intelligence gathering, community collaboration, and inter-agency coordination to stay ahead of emerging security threats.

The statement concluded by reiterating the governors’ dedication to safeguarding the region, ensuring public safety, and maintaining stability across Southern Nigeria.
