Death toll from last Tuesday's tragic boat accident in Kano State has increased to 42.

The victims were mostly pupils on their way to participate in Maulud celebration at Bagwai Area when the accident happened.

Twenty-nine corpses were earlier recovered, while seven people were rescued alive. 

However, 13 more corpses were recovered over the weekend, bringing the total number of fatalities to 42.

This was made known yesterday in Kano by the Bagwai Local Government Area Information Officer, Tasiu Jibo Dawanau. 

"The boat was connveying 49 persons when it capsized. 41 lost their lives. Initially, they were 30 but we recovered 11 additional bodies during the weekend. 8 persons survived the incident. The deceased have been buried according to Islamic laws", he said.

He stated that the Kano State Government has constituted a committee to investigate the unfortunate accident.

He also said two buses have been provided to support the movement of passengers between Badau village and Bagwai. 

He added that the State Government has also distributed relief materials like bags of rice, groceries and N6 million cash to the families of the victims.
