KENYA SUSPENDS ALL FLIGHTS TO AND FROM SOMALIA FOR THREE MONTHS

Reports indicate that Kenya on Monday suspended flights to and from Somalia which would take effect from Tuesday May 11 to August 9.

In a Notice to Airmen (Notam), the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said flights departing for or arriving from Somalia will not be allowed for three months, adding that only humanitarian deliveries and medical evacuation flights will be allowed into the country.

The announcement comes less than a week after the Somalian Government said it was restoring diplomatic relations with Kenya, six months after cutting ties over Kenya’s interference in Somali politics.

Relationships between both nations has also diminished following the disputed ownership of potential oil and gas deposits, some of which lie off the coast of Jubbaland, one of Somalia’s five semi-autonomous states.
