Lagos Assembly Speakership Crisis Nears Resolution Amid APC Intervention
The ongoing speakership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly may soon be resolved following the intervention of key figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC). The impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, are reportedly considering stepping down to pave the way for a new lawmaker to lead the House.
This development comes after high-profile APC leaders, including Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, were directed by President Bola Tinubu to mediate and de-escalate the political tension after the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) struggled to find a solution.
The crisis erupted on January 13, 2025, when 36 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa and install Meranda, who was then the deputy speaker. Obasa was accused of poor leadership, lateness to legislative sessions, high-handedness, misuse of office, and misappropriation of funds, among other issues. Obasa, who was in Atlanta, USA, at the time of his removal, has since contested his impeachment, insisting it was procedurally flawed.
At a meeting on Sunday at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina, attended by Osoba, Ambode, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other GAC members, discussions focused on finding a lasting resolution. According to sources, the APC leadership is considering a lawmaker from Lagos West as the new Speaker, given the seniority system practiced in the House.
"The issue will die down soon. By next week, everything will become clearer," said Chief Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member, confirming the consideration of seven ranking lawmakers from Lagos West for the position.
Among the top contenders is David Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II. A member of the House since 2015, Setonji is the current Chief Whip and a former deputy chief whip, known for his experience and seniority.
As part of the proposed resolution, both Obasa and Meranda are expected to step down, and Obasa is likely to withdraw his lawsuit against the Assembly and Meranda, which challenged the legitimacy of his removal.
The Chairman of GAC, Chief Tajudeen Olusi, confirmed the party’s mediation efforts, stating that all sides are being heard, and a final resolution will soon be announced.
With compromises on both sides, it is hoped that the crisis will be settled within the week, bringing stability back to the Lagos State House of Assembly.
