LAGOS GIVES REASONS FOR LOCKDOWN RELAXATION SOCIAL MEDIA POLL

Lagos State Government has said the results of the polls it conducted on its social media platforms are not primary determinants of its decision to extend COVID-19 lockdown or not.

The Lagos State Government, on Wednesday, started a social media opinion poll on Twitter which ends tomorrow Friday, May 15, purported to determine whether Lagosians want an extension to the lockdown or not.

Olusina Thorpe, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, said the development is to carry the general public along in the administration of the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Thorpe reiterated that the outcome of the opinion poll would not decide if the Government will impose another lockdown order, or not in the coming weeks

Speaking further, he said results compiled from polls today can not be used to decide for the residents as decisions from voters from different social media platforms vary.

The poll was also featured on the Facebook Page of LASG, but it did not gather as much views as it has on Twitter.

Earlier, Lagos State Government threatened to revert to full lockdown if there is no improvement in adherence to the public health guidelines.

The State Government noted that in the first week of the easing of the lockdown, there had been a repetitive and flagrant disregard for the earlier announced health guidelines, a move that could frustrate the Government's efforts to curtail the spread of Coronavirus.

The Permanent Secretary said those who want the lockdown to continue on Facebook are lesser than those that do not want it re-imposed, while on the Twitter reverse was the case, more Twitter users want another lockdown.

Thorpe said that with the look of reactions of voters to the poll, the value of the poll could not be undermined in the decision-making process adding that the view of the public will be considered while the Government makes its final decisions.

He commended Lagosians for expressing their views by voting and also urged them to follow all safety measures and guidelines imposed by the State Government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, to curb community spread of the virus.
