LAWYER WRITES SANWO-OLU, REQUESTS CCTV FOOTAGE OF LEKKI TOLL GATE SHOOTINGS

Human rights lawyer, Inihehe Effiong, has written to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, demanding the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage showing the shooting of #ENDSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate area of the State on Tuesday, October 20. 


The activist also requested for the certified copies of the instrument setting up the Judicial panel of inquiry and restitution for victims of SARS related abuses and the Lekki toll gate incident with its term of reference. 


In the letter titled, 'Urgent Request Pursuant to the freedom of Information Act, 2011', Effiong promised to undertake and pay the cost of certification and any applicable administrative fees. 


The letter read :“I am a Nigerian citizen, resident of Lagos State, human rights activist, private legal practitioner and lawful participant in the #EndSARS movement cum peaceful protest.

“As an interested party and pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, I hereby respectfully apply for the authenticated copies of the Closed Circuit Television records showing the attack on the #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos on October 20, 2020.”


The lawyer urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to use the opportunity to "honour your oath of office and advance your pledge to ensure that truth and justice prevails."


The letter was submitted to the office of the Governor on Monday, October 26.

Soldiers on Tuesday night,October 20, allegedly opened fire on #ENDSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, killing and injuring many of them.


Men of the Nigerian army also allegedly prevented ambulances from accessing the scene to evacuate those injured to the hospital after opening fire on them.


However, the Nigerian Army debunked the reports, saying it did not kill any protester at the scene. 


The incident had attracted global outrage against the Nigerian authorities, leading to the destruction of public properties.
