Midnight Attack in Benue Leaves Four Dead, Reprisal Claims 20 Cattle

Four persons have been confirmed dead following an attack by suspected armed herders in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, with retaliatory actions reportedly resulting in the killing of about 20 cattle.


According to security sources, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on April 7, 2026, when armed men invaded Agber-Chicha village in Imadi Dem community, opening fire on residents. Four individuals were killed, while another sustained injuries.


Security operatives were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call. The bodies of the victims were evacuated to a hospital, while the injured person was taken to the General Hospital in Gbajimba for treatment.


Zagazola Makama reports that in the aftermath of the attack, relatives of the victims carried out a reprisal, targeting a herders’ settlement in Imande, where approximately 20 cattle were killed. One herder was also reported missing.


Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for both the initial attack and the subsequent retaliation. Security agencies have also intensified patrols in the area to prevent further escalation and restore calm.
