NETFLIX AND ACE FILM PRODUCER, MO ABUDU, PARTNER TO SCREEN LITERARY CLASSICS OF TWO AWARD-WINNING AUTHORS- WOLE SOYINKA AND LOLA SHONEYIN
Netflix today announced that it has partnered with award-winning film producer, Mo Abudu to adapt two of Nigeria's most respected literary classics: Wole Soyinka's 'Death and the King's Horseman' and Lola Shoneyin's 'Baba Sege's Wives.'
"We've got MAJOR news for you today! Netflix has partnered with acclaimed producer @MoAbudu to bring you two of Nigeria's most beloved literary classics to screens around the world!," Netflix said in a tweet.
"A series-adaptation of @LolaShoneyin's The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives and a film-adaptation of Prof. Wole Soyinka's Death And The King's Horseman!"
The first African laureate's play, 'Death and the King's Horseman', will be adapted into a film while Shoneyin's debut novel, 'The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives' will be developed into a series.
Reacting to the news on Twitter, the film producer and owner of Ebony Life TV Mo Abudu revealed that her company had made history as the first African and first Nigerian production company to sign multiple deals with Netflix.
"I am excited about our slate of Netflix Original projects to be produced by EBONYLIFE STUDIOS. First on our list is 'The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives' based on the book by the super talented writer @LolaShoneyin."
She revealed that she acquired the rights to produce Death and the King's Horseman as a feature film from Prof Wole Soyinka.
"Now 5 years later I have the opportunity to produce this incredible piece of work in partnership with Netflix. Dear Prof, thank you so much for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to produce such a historical piece of literature," she said.
"In addition to these two IP titles, we will also be producing a slate of original shows created by EbonyLife exclusively under license to Netflix. I am thrilled and grateful to #MyAwesomeGod, The Netflix team @DGhettuba, Ben Amadasun and of course the incredible EBONYLIFE team
