Nigeria Police Force Demands Retraction, Apology from Amnesty International Over Alleged False Publication

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a formal demand for a public apology and the retraction of a publication titled "Bloody August: Nigeria Government's Violent Crackdown on End Bad Governance Protests," in a letter addressed to Amnesty International on January 6, 2025.

The publication, which accuses the NPF of human rights violations, police brutality, and excessive force during the August 2024 End Bad Governance protests, has been described by the Police as baseless and devoid of factual evidence.

In its response, the NPF maintained that it operated with professionalism and restraint throughout the protests, adhering to global best practices. The Police emphasized that minimal force was used only when necessary and pointed to media reports as evidence of its commitment to maintaining law and order while safeguarding peaceful protesters. The Force added that criminal elements exploiting the protests were arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law.

The NPF expressed concern that the publication undermines the trust it has worked to build with the Nigerian public and tarnishes its reputation. It further stated that such allegations demoralize officers who put their lives on the line to protect citizens.

The Police Force has demanded a formal apology and retraction from Amnesty International within seven days, warning that legal action may follow if the demands are not met.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its dedication to upholding its mandate of protecting lives and property, enforcing the law, and fostering public trust.
