NSCDC Deploys Mining Marshals to Seven Zones, Launches Crackdown on Illegal Mining
In a major push to combat illegal mining and bolster enforcement within the solid minerals sector, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed specially trained Mining Marshals across seven operational zones nationwide.
The deployment, announced by the Commandant General of the Corps, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, marks a significant decentralization of mining enforcement operations. It also comes with the commissioning of ten rugged operational vehicles designed to support the Marshals in surveillance, intelligence-led patrols, and rapid response to mining-related infractions.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja, Professor Audi described the initiative as a strategic reform aimed at strengthening the Corps’ presence in mining hotspots and enhancing regional enforcement effectiveness.
“With this deployment, we are expanding our operational reach and confronting illegal mining activities with renewed determination,” the Commandant General said. “These Marshals are fully trained and equipped to professionally enforce regulations and protect our solid mineral assets from economic saboteurs.”
The initiative, he added, is in line with the Federal Government’s drive to diversify the economy and reinforces the Corps’ mandate to safeguard critical national assets and infrastructure.
NSCDC also called on stakeholders in the mining industry — including host communities, licensed operators, and regulatory agencies — to collaborate with the Mining Marshals and report suspicious activities to the nearest NSCDC office.
The Corps reiterated its commitment to promoting legal mining practices, environmental preservation, and the protection of Nigeria’s mineral wealth from illegal exploitation.
