Police Foil Cross-Border Fuel Smuggling, Seize Over 100 Jerrycans of Petrol
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Border Patrol Unit have intercepted over one hundred jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, in separate operations aimed at curbing cross-border smuggling.
During a routine stop-and-search along the Illela–Sokoto Highway, officers of the unit intercepted a vehicle loaded with eighty jerrycans of petrol and arrested the driver, identified as Yasir Adamu. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was attempting to smuggle the product across the border into the Niger Republic.
In a related operation, personnel of the Border Patrol Unit in Katsina State recovered thirty-five jerrycans, each containing twenty-five litres of petrol, after smugglers abandoned the consignment and fled upon sighting security operatives. Efforts are currently underway to track down the fleeing suspects.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify border security operations and clamp down on all forms of economic sabotage.
