SUPREME COURT DISMISSES BENUE PDP'S APPEAL CASE, AFFIRMING HYACINTH ALIA WINNER OF THE GOVERNORSHIP POLLS
Titus Uba and the Peoples Democratic Party's appeal, aiming to overturn the judgments of the Appeal Court and Benue State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in favour of Governor Hyacinth Alia from the All Progressives Congress, has been rejected by the Supreme Court.
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the PDP was not justified in bringing the matter before them.
Following Alia's declaration as the winner of the governorship poll by INEC, Uba and the PDP contested the result, arguing that the governor was not qualified to contest the election at that time.
They accused Samuel Ode, the deputy, of presenting a forged certificate to INEC, violating Section 182(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution.
Additionally, they asserted that the governor's name was submitted to INEC after the constitutionally specified deadline. However, the tribunal, led by Justice Ibrahim Karaye, dismissed the petition, citing it as a pre-election matter and barred by statute.
