Nigerian Lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh Embroiled in Assault Allegations"
Human rights advocacy groups, Take It Back Movement (TIB) and the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), have called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member, over the brutal assault of a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The groups issued the demand on Monday, condemning the lawmaker’s violent attack and his disturbing threat to make the driver “disappear from Nigeria” without consequences.
Earlier reports from SaharaReporters revealed a viral video circulating on social media, showing Ikwechegh assaulting the driver who had arrived at his Abuja residence to make a delivery.
Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, was seen repeatedly slapping the driver and verbally abusing him for requesting the lawmaker to come to his car to collect the delivery. During the assault, Ikwechegh threatened to make the driver vanish, boasting that even if the driver contacted the Inspector-General of Police, nothing would happen.
The lawmaker also destroyed the driver’s phone, tore his clothes, and refused to pay for the service, claiming the driver had disrespected him. He further threatened to lock the driver in his generator house to teach him a lesson.
Reacting to the incident, TIB demanded immediate legal action, saying:
“We call for the arrest and prosecution of Alex Ikwechegh for the assault on a hardworking Abuja Uber driver. The dishonorable lawmaker must also answer for how many other Nigerians he has caused to disappear without trace.”
RULAAC’s Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, added that Ikwechegh’s actions exemplify the abuse of power by public officials and a disregard for human dignity.
“This behavior reflects a troubling pattern of impunity among those in authority. It is unacceptable, and immediate accountability is necessary,” Nwanguma stated. “The Senate leadership and the Inspector-General of Police must act swiftly to restore public trust by addressing this incident.”
The police, through a statement on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that an arrest had been made. However, a popular activist known as "A Very Dark Man" disputed this, stating on X that Ikwechegh is still moving freely without any repercussions.
In addition to these developments, the House of Representatives has reportedly ordered that Ikwechegh’s salary for the month be given to the assaulted driver as part of disciplinary measures.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to follow this developing story.
