TERRORISM: KATSINA STATE ORDERS RESTORATION OF TELECOMS SERVICES IN SOME AREAS
The Katsina State Government has announced the restoration of telecommunication services in some parts of the State.
Special Adviser to Gov. Aminu Masari on Security Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Katsina, said this in Katsina, on Thursday.
He said the State Government plans to resume telecoms operations as relative peace and normalcy have returned to the areas.
The Local Government Areas in question are: Batsari, Kurfi, Danmusa, Jibia, Dutsin-Ma, Kankara, Matazu, Musawa, Funtua, Faskari, Sabuwa, Safana, Bakori, Danja, Malumfashi and Dandume.
Recall that the State Government had shut all telecommunication facilities in September, due to activities of bandits, kidnappers and terrorists.
Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State also lifted a similar ban earlier this week. His Kaduna State Government counterpart did same last month, two months after telecommunication companies shut down their services in some parts of the State.
These interventions are said to be part of the State Government and Security Agencies measures to check the activities of bandits, kidnappers, terrorists and other criminal elements.
However, residents and stakeholders opinions are divided on the impact of the ban in the first place. It has been lauded in some quarters while some have equally called it an unnecessary and a counter productive initiative.
At a recent Press Conference, the Katsina State Secetary to the State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, said the bandits have been unrelenting in circumventing the security measures devised to curb their activities.
He said the bandits have resorted to using satellite phones and walkie talkies for their nefarious activities.
Some critics of the ban are also of the opinion that it created more problems than it was meant to solve in the first place, from a security and economic sense.
Recall that a sitting Commissioner for Sceience and Technology, Rabe Nasir was murdered by yet-to-be identified assailants at his residence at Fatima Shema Estate, katsina in Katsina State.
