Bill seeking loss of immunity for Public Officials passes second reading.
According to the Punch Newspapers, The bill sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate had passed the first reading on Monday.
The proposed bill seeks to modify the sections of the constitution to allow for the arrest and prosecution of the Vice-President, governors and deputy-governors.
Reports also confirmed that the President of Nigeria would still have his immunity intact as the bill did not include the office of the president in the list of the officials that could lose their immunity.
If an assent is giving to the proposed by President Buhari,public officials would lose their immunity and would be arrested and prosecuted by law enforcement agencies if they are indicted for misappropriation of public funds.
Also, the use of thugs in any form foment violence, by any public official could jeopardize their immunity as well.
The bill seeks to substitute subsection 2 of Section 308, with a new subsection.
It stated that any beneficiary of the immunity clause currently in the constitution would lose it if indicted by the court after a thorough investigation by the police and the anti-graft agencies.
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, referred it to the Committee on Constitution Review for further lawmaking actions.
