Tinubu Orders Withdrawal of Police From VIP Protection, Assigns NSCDC to Replace Them
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned to protect Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country. The decision was issued during a high-level security meeting held on Sunday, November 23, in Abuja, attended by service chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to the presidency, the move is aimed at redirecting police personnel to their primary duties and strengthening security presence in communities where police stations are understaffed, particularly in remote areas.
Under the new directive, VIPs who require security escorts will now obtain armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of the police.
The presidency added that President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers, with ongoing collaboration between the federal and state governments to upgrade training facilities nationwide.
Top security officials present at the meeting included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the DG of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
