Tiv, Fulani Communities in Taraba Sign Peace Accord Under 6 Brigade's Non-Kinetic Initiative
In a renewed effort to promote peaceful coexistence and end communal hostilities in Taraba State, stakeholders from the Tiv and Fulani communities of Gassol Local Government Area have signed a peace accord facilitated by the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army under its non-kinetic conflict resolution approach.
The peace dialogue, held on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo, was convened by the Commander 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa. The engagement followed heightened tensions and longstanding disputes between the Tiv and Fulani communities in Gassol LGA.
The meeting brought together the Chairman of Gassol LGA, Hon. Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, community elders, and other critical stakeholders to chart a sustainable path to peace and stability.
In his address, Brigadier General Uwa condemned the recurring violence and warned against resorting to self-help or taking the law into one’s hands. He stressed that no individual or group has the legal authority to enforce justice outside due process, urging all parties to serve as ambassadors of peace and development within their communities.
“Peace, security, and economic growth can only thrive in an atmosphere of unity and mutual respect,” the Commander stated, while commending the Gassol LGA Chairman for his leadership and commitment to fostering dialogue.
At the end of the deliberations, the parties unanimously agreed to embrace peaceful coexistence, promote regular dialogue, and refrain from protecting criminal elements within their communities. They also pledged to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely intelligence to prevent a resurgence of violence.
Speaking on behalf of the communities, Hon. Abubakar Usman praised Brigadier General Uwa and the 6 Brigade for initiating the peace process, acknowledging the Nigerian Army's sacrifices and consistent efforts to maintain stability in the region.
The peace meeting concluded with the formal signing of a peace pact by all stakeholders, signaling a collective commitment to uphold the resolutions and support security agencies in implementing the agreement.
The initiative underscores the strategic role of non-kinetic interventions by the military in addressing communal conflicts and promoting unity across Taraba State.
