Troops Foil Attack on NIPSS, Neutralise Assailant, Recover Stolen Army Rifle

Troops of Sector 6, Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE, have foiled an attempted attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area, killing one suspected assailant and recovering a service rifle previously stolen from a slain Nigerian Army soldier.

The incident occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, when suspected armed criminals attempted to breach the institute's perimeter under the cover of darkness. Alert troops swiftly engaged the attackers in a gun battle, neutralising one of the suspects, while others fled into nearby high ground with suspected gunshot wounds. The military confirmed that none of its personnel was injured during the exchange.

Following the operation, troops recovered an AK-pattern rifle loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition. Preliminary investigations revealed that the weapon belonged to a Nigerian Army soldier who was killed during an attack by suspected militia at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on April 11, 2026. The recovered rifle has been taken into military custody as investigations continue into the latest attack and its possible connection to previous incidents in the Kuru–Vom axis.

The body of the neutralised suspect has been evacuated to a mortuary through the appropriate authorities, while troops have intensified area domination patrols, clearance operations, and pursuit of the fleeing suspects around NIPSS Kuru and neighbouring communities.

The Nigerian Army said the security situation remains under control, with normal activities continuing at the institute and surrounding areas. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting strategic national assets, safeguarding lives, and restoring lasting peace across Plateau State, while urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
