US expresses concern after gunmen kill nine members of Plateau pastor's family
The United States has condemned the killing of nine members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s extended family in Plateau State, urging Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The US Bureau of African Affairs, in a statement shared on X on Thursday, described the incident as a horrific attack and expressed condolences to the bereaved family and other victims affected by the violence.
The bureau called for urgent measures to prevent further attacks, particularly against Christian communities and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, while urging security agencies to strengthen protection efforts.
It stated that discussions had already been held with Nigerian officials over the rising cases of violence, stressing that perpetrators of such attacks must face justice.
The United States also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in tackling terrorism and violent extremism, adding that all citizens should be able to practise their faith without fear.
The latest attack occurred on July 12 in Kum community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where armed men reportedly invaded the area overnight and killed nine relatives of Rev. Dachomo, including a two-month-old baby.
According to the cleric, the attackers called out his name before opening fire on his family members. He alleged that the attack was linked to previous threats against him over his advocacy on insecurity in the state.
Rev. Dachomo, who is the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, disclosed that his grandmother and an uncle had also been killed in previous attacks.
He further revealed that days after burying his relatives, he received a written threat allegedly warning that he would be the next target.
