WTO GENERAL COUNCIL SETS TO MAKE FINAL DECISION ON ELECTION PROCESS ON NOVEMBER 9
The General Council of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) would hold a final meeting where it would make a decision on the election process for the position of Director-General.
This was made known in a press statement issued by the spokesperson of Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, on Thursday, October 29.
Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the third and final round of the selection process of the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was concluded on Tuesday, October 27.
On Wednesday, October 28, Nigerians were elated at reports from the media indicating that Dr Okonjo-Iweala had emerged the new DG of the WTO
The official announcement pronouncing Dr Okonjo-Iweala as DG was however delayed as she was objected by delegates from the US at a WTO meeting in Geneva.
The Ministry revealed that Okonjo-Iweala has secured the support of majority of the member countries, numbering 164, but is yet to be declared and returned the winner.
It noted that all 164 Member States of WTO were expected to adopt the winner by consensus, in accordance with the rule of procedure of the WTO.
The Ministry added that Nigeria will continue to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure that the lofty aspiration of her candidate to lead the World Trade Organization is realised.
