TUC THREATENS TO DOWN TOOLS IF PETROL, ELECTRICITY PRICES ARE NOT REVERSED
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has threatened to down tools and embark on industrial strike action and if the Federal Government does not reverse the prices of electricity and petrol.
The union gave this warning in a letter addressed to President Buhari on Monday, September 14th, 2020.
The letter titled; ‘We cannot bear the burden any longer, issuance of seven days ultimatum,’ and signed by the union’s president, Mr Quadri Olaleye, and its Secretary-General, Mr Musa Lawal.
The TUC vowed to embark on the indefinite industrial strike action and a national protest from Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020, if the President does not reverse the hike.
“We have observed the gradual and steady annihilation of Nigeria and Nigerians in the light of government actions for the umpteenth time,” the union said.
The union said the issue has become a major worry to Nigeria’s working class, their families, and the masses.
It said the sudden increase in the pump price of petrol came without any definitive and concrete efforts to make the nation’s refineries functional.

The TUC revealed that the Federal Government did not consider the economic effects of the Coronavirus pandemic before increasing the electricity tariff.
The union said, “Government should take immediate steps to: reverse the hike in prices as it affects electricity, petrol and all other social services in the country to status quo ante (prior to increase) within seven days.
“Provide adequate and quality healthcare and education for all to save the poor and the vulnerable at all levels.
“These demands are made in good faith, and to save the dying masses and the vulnerable in our society. In the event of not showing empathy for this class of people by adhering to above demands, we shall, together with our civil societies and allies sympathetic to the suffering masses of our people, commence an indefinite industrial action and national protest from Wednesday, September 23, 2020.”
