KANO STATE GOVERNOR PARDON 12 INMATES ON DEATH ROW

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Tuesday, pardoned and discharged 12 inmates on death row in the state, the Governor equally acquitted four female inmates with long-term sentences and commuted six death sentences to life imprisonment in the state.


This was done following the reports of the inmates' good behaviour and industriousness presented by the correctional authority to the Prerogative of Mercy.


The information available indicates that some of the pardoned inmates had spent 25 years awaiting execution.

However, the Chairman of the Prerogative of Mercy, Abdullahi Rano, appreciated the governor for using the power conferred on him by the Constitution in releasing the inmates who had possessed good behaviour as it is being recommended by the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.


The Controller of Corrections, Kano State, Sulaiman Inuwa, urged the freed inmates to be reasonable diplomats of the service to society and to get isolated from any activities that could bring them back to the facility. 


Meanwhile, The governor gifted N5,000 transport fare to each of the freed inmates to enable them to reunite with their families.
