Plateau police arrest clergyman, air force and navy personnel over alleged plot to abduct bishops’ wives
The Plateau State Police Command has arrested three suspects, including a clergyman and two military personnel, over an alleged plan to abduct the wives of two prominent bishops in Jos.
The suspects were taken into custody following intelligence received by the police concerning an alleged kidnapping plot involving the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi.
According to the Command, the incident was recorded at about 2:10 p.m. on 7 August 2026.
One of the suspects was identified as 42-year-old Reverend Hassan Yunisim Mijah of Tudun Wada, Jos North. Police said he was allegedly working with Sergeant Ezra Sunday of the Nigerian Air Force and OS Usman Khalid of the Nigerian Navy, both attached to Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) in Jos.
The police alleged that the trio had planned to target the wives of the two bishops, who are residents of the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area.
The Command said the suspects were interrogated following their arrest and allegedly provided information linking them to the suspected plot.
The police also disclosed that the leadership of Operation Enduring Peace had been formally notified of the arrest of the two personnel serving under the operation.
Investigations are ongoing as the Command works to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged conspiracy and determine whether other individuals were involved.
